Meeting with Clara Cohen-Solal, creator of the blog 'Les Marseillaises'

In less than two years, 'Les Marseillaises' by Clara Cohen-Solal has earned itself a place under the Provençal sun. No doubt thanks to the young Marseille native's ability to impart her joie de vivre, and present a modern view of the region through her blog. Meeting.

An epicurean woman

What are the little everyday things that make you smile? What makes you happy?

A good cup of tea and fresh bread straight from the bakery for breakfast. The little funny faces or remarks that my daughter, Pia, makes. A sunny day – as a Southern girl, I like it when there is light.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Hazelnut chocolate.

What natural gift would you like to have?

Baby soft skin for life (laughs)!

An accomplished blogger

What inspires you?

Reading, I read magazines a lot. In the blog, I really want to find a fresh way to write about the town and the people, which isn't clichéd at all. I am inspired by people with unique ambitions, or by a part of town which is run-down, but where this run-down nature is part of its identity.

What are your influences?

I really appreciate interior design. This interest reflects the aesthetic points I try to apply to other parts of my life too, in particular my blog. And more generally speaking, my parents. My mother has passed on her style to me: slightly bohemian yet modern, with a house filled with books from floor to ceiling.

What would be your dream job?

Honestly, the real dream for me would be to not work at all (laughs). Otherwise architecture, I'm interested in the process of taking a drawing and constructing a building, while at the same time taking into account the constraints. Some architects are real artists.

A sophisticated beauty lover

How would you define feminine beauty?

A good measure of grace and intelligence. And a little vanity: a touch of make-up, paying a bit of attention to your hair, not being completely casual. Subtle sophistication!

What's your well-being secret for when you need to recharge your batteries?

Maybe that's what I'm missing! It's not strictly what you'd call relaxation, but I like to go to the hairdresser to change my hairstyle or colour. I come out feeling renewed. It's a way of recharging my batteries. Unless it's a disaster, in which case there is drama!

What's your little indulgence to make you feel beautiful?

Beautiful clothes, a pretty pair of shoes, or just simply looking good. You always feel more beautiful when you look rested.

A true Marseillaise

As a native of Marseille, what aspect of Provence inspires you?

Beyond the beautiful weather, it's the light. There is a particular quality to the sky here, it seems to be higher and more luminous. When you've grown up in Marseille, the need for a cloudless and endless sky is something that sticks with you.

Which smell and sound personify Provence for you?

For the sound, it's the sing-song accent of the South. For the smell, it's the orange blossom in the gardens.

Your perception of the Provençal woman?

I imagine her as a laid back brunette who enjoys life. Between the comfort of Southern life and all that cooking with olive oil, she probably looks less stressed than most (laughs).
